Who is Miss Nikki Naomi Claudia Have-A-Chat?

Nikki Have-A-Chat is a 3 year old  (2000) Burmese cat.  She adopted me when I moved into a new house when she was approx a year old.  The long name is partly due to this hesitant beginning, not wanting to name a cat that would be reclaimed by her rightful owner.  Initially callled Miss Have-A-Chat due to her love of a socialising - her motto "I'd rather chat than eat" helps her keep a svelte Burmese figure.  Nikki, Naomi and Claudia were proposed at various stages for her supermodel attitude.  Nikki stuck when she simultaneously received a nick in her ear and tongue after a fight, and she decided that this was a name she would answer to.
Why a Web page?

Nikki's claim to 'fame' is that she is a survivor of pyothorax.  At one stage she was reduced to living off approx half of a single lung, but now she has made a full recovery over the course of a year.  I wanted to publish this page to provide some resources and encouragement for other cat owners in the same position.  This can be a very depressing disease and during the course of it's treatment there may be many times when you wonder whether you are doing the right thing for your cat.  I am not a vet, and this is not a veterinary resource,  this is the story of my cat's survival of pyothorax from an owner's perspective.
A Word of Warning

I have included photos of Nikki at various stages of her treatment.  In some photos she is very thin, having lost almost a third of her body weight while ill, partly shaved and not looking very attractive at all.  In hindsight I wish that I'd kept a complete record of her ailment and progress but at the time I was more concerned with keeping her alive, so I have tried to describe her condition as fully as I can.  Your own cat may get very sick indeed, if it has this disease.
Hopefully, if you are dealing with a very sick cat too, this will help you to realise that all is not lost even though your cat may look terrible and you may feel awful about the treatments you and your vet are providing.  During the course of the treatment of a pyothorax cat you will be giving your cat a lot of medicines at home.  This may not be pleasant, for you or the cat.  This will probably not be a little tablet once a day, but more likely a combination of treatments several times a day, for weeks on end.  You will be dealing with a cat who is already very sick, who may be having problems breathing and who's chest is painful and structurally unsound.  You will probably feel like a total swine but it is very very important that your cat gets ALL of its prescriptions.
